MRI of the Brain

Basics: What is an MRI of the Brain?

Brain MRI is the most common MRI study performed, and it provides the most sensitive imaging study of the brain in terms of image resolution and soft tissue contrast. This exam is the gold standard in terms of evaluating the brain for abnormalities. This extremely sensitive exam makes it easier for radiologists to identify brain tumors, infections, inflammation, stroke, bleeding, and many genetic abnormalities. Here at Siker Medical Imaging, we provide the most varied and advanced brain MRI examinations available in a clinical environment, not just in Portland, but anywhere in the country that we are aware of. We capable of performing more than 30 different imaging exams alone for brain MRI, and that does not include functional imaging. Originally, brain MRI provided only static anatomic information but has since become much more advanced and can now with the ability to provide an ever-expanding list of physiologic information. These new tools include functional MRI, which can detect which part of the brain has been activated to respond to a particular stimulus; Perfusion MRI & Arterial Spin Labelling, which measures regional blood flow; Diffusion Tensor Imaging which examines the functionality and course of white matter tracts; MR spectroscopy which can actually provide information about tissue type and CSF flow studies which measure and graph CSF velocities.

Discussion of all of the different types of MRI brain studies that we perform is beyond the scope of this page.
