MRI of the Elbow
Basics: About MRI of the Elbow?
MRI of the elbow is the gold standard for evaluating the elbow joint. It is usually obtained without contrast.
Elbow
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for the evaluation of the elbow is considered medically necessary for the following indications:
- Fractures in children.
- Evaluation of avascular necrosis in the radial head.
- When neural conduction studies are inconclusive and symptoms are refractory to conservative therapy.
- Evaluation of suspected avascular necrosis of the capitellum.
- Evaluation of intra-articular loose bodies.
- In the preoperative assessment of heterotopic ossification.
- Evaluation of suspected cartilaginous defects.
Discussion of images above:
1. 1.5 x 0.4 x 0.6 cm (TRV x CC x AP) insertional partial thickness triceps tendon tear, involving the superficial and medial tendon fibers. Grade II. 2 x 6 mm avulsed olecranon fragment vs heterotopic ossification.
2. Adjacent tendinosis and subcutaneous edema involving the posterior and posterior medial aspect of the elbow.
